2007 O'neil Cold Water Classic took place the week of October
9 in Santa Cruz, CA. We trekked down to meet up with professional
surfer Chris Dennis, a native of Trinidad and Tobago. Chris has
been surfing competitively for over 10 years. He is one of very
few professional black surfers on the WQS circuit. This visit
brought us an interesting 'behind the scenes' look at what these
guys do in and around their events. Chris was staying with his
good friend, and former Cold Water Classic Champion, Pete Mel.
Kevin Cooke, Jason Gittens, Peter Mel, Chris Dennis , and Crib
house seems to be a hub for good friends who are also his surf
opponents. Argentinean pro surfer Magnum Martinez was posted up
at Pete's as well. It was very cool spend time with all of these
guys as they went from game face during competition time, to just
hanging out as friends way late in the night.
unexpected events were hanging out at "Camp Volcom"
with Sean Slater (Kelly Slater's brother). As a rep for Volcom,
Sean gets to sport this RV up and down the west coast during competition
time. This Surfing RV was totally decked out with all of the best
of modern day conveniences and amenities
including a 36"
plasma television with DirecTV service!!!
surprises (or not) was running in to Santa Cruz native and big
wave charger Ken "Skin Dog" Collins.
